In August of 2017, the American Heart Association launched a search for the best and brightest innovators around the country at the intersection of tech and health through the EmPOWERED To Serve™ Urban Business Storytelling Competition. Fueled by the excitement of discovering groundbreaking solutions to address the Social Determinants of Health on our quest to solve for cardiovascular disease and stroke, we asked and you responded. With over 130 submissions, it was difficult, but our selection committee selected 10 finalists to compete live at the EmPOWERED To Serve Summit for $60,000 in prize money.
Meet the Winners
First Place: Nyasha Nyamapfene, Gospel Run
Gospel Run is a public health organization created to inspire health, transformation and expanded possibilities in the individuals, families and communities we serve.
Second Place: Maria Rose Belding, MEANS Database
MEANS Database notifies food banks and pantries of food donations in their neighborhood. Food Connect delivers surplus food from retailers to community organizations serving the hungry.
Third Place: Cecil Wilson, Goffers Inc.
The GoffersGotIt motto is “Getting Things Done on the Go!” Goffers provides on-demand mobile task assistance. Services include, but are not limited to, grocery shopping, laundry delivery and prescription refills.

EmPOWERED To Serve™ Summit Recap
At this conference, the American Heart Association and its parters built upon the progress made to create a “Culture of Health” in diverse and under-resourced communities across the United States. We also celebrated the results of the Urban Storytelling Competition, which sought out innovative business solutions to community health issues.
